Iran’s high prosecutor, key navy figures sanctioned by Treasury over protest crackdowns


The Treasury Division introduced sanctions on Wednesday in opposition to the highest Iranian official overseeing the prosecution of protesters and key navy figures who’ve cracked down on demonstrations in latest months. 

Iran has been roiled by mass protests over the dying of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old lady who died after being taken into custody by the regime’s so-called morality police for allegedly not sporting a hijab. 

The sanctions introduced Wednesday embrace Iranian Prosecutor Common Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, who issued a directive in late September for courts to challenge harsh sentences to protesters

Two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officers and two high officers from Iran’s Basij Resistance Forces, a paramilitary pressure managed by the IRGC, have been additionally sanctioned.

“We denounce the Iranian regime’s intensifying use of violence in opposition to its personal people who find themselves advocating for his or her human rights,” Underneath Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Monetary Intelligence Brian Nelson stated in a press release.

Practically 500 folks have been killed since protests started about two months in the past and greater than 18,000 have been detained by authorities, in line with Human Rights Activists in Iran, a company that has been monitoring the protests.

Two prisoners have already been executed. Majidreza Rahnavard, accused of fatally stabbing two members of a paramilitary pressure, was publicly hanged from a building crane earlier this month in Masshad. One other prisoner, Mohsen Shekari, was executed on Dec. 8.
